Shopify Plus vs a Custom Build for a D2C Brand: What It Costs in 2026
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month; a custom build is $15,000 to $50,000 once. Dated prices, a three-year total, the break-even volume and when each route wins.

Short answer: most D2C brands under about $10 million a year in online sales should stay on Shopify and not move to Shopify Plus. Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term ($27,600 a year), against $299 a month for Advanced on annual billing, and its only guaranteed saving is a lower card rate: 2.25% instead of 2.5% per online order. That saving covers the extra fee only once card volume passes about $9.6 million a year. A custom build is worth paying for when the thing holding the brand back is not the storefront but the operations behind it: subscriptions with your own rules, wholesale and DTC sharing one stock count, bundles, loyalty, or a storefront that the platform's checkout cannot express. A first production version costs $15,000 to $50,000 once. All Shopify and Upwork prices below were read from their own pages on 7 October 2026.

What Plus costs over three years, and when it pays
Plus on the 3-year term is $2,300 a month, so $27,600 a year and $82,800 over three years. On the 1-year term it is $2,500 a month, $30,000 a year. Advanced on annual billing is $3,588 a year. The extra cost of Plus is therefore about $24,000 a year on the 3-year term.
The one saving Shopify publishes is the card rate. Using Shopify Payments, Plus charges 2.25% against 2.5% on Advanced, a gap of 0.25 percentage points, and the 30¢ per order is the same. $24,012 of extra fee divided by 0.0025 is about $9.6 million of annual card volume before the rate saving alone pays for Plus. A brand doing $4 million saves $10,000 and pays $24,000 more. A brand doing $15 million saves $37,500 and comes out about $13,500 ahead, before counting anything else Plus unlocks.
That "anything else" is the real reason to move. Plus gives access to checkout customisation, Shopify Functions for custom discount and shipping logic, B2B tools and expansion stores. If one of those removes a manual process that costs a person's week every month, it can justify Plus below $9.6 million. If none of them does, the fee buys prestige. The Shopify website development cost guide breaks down what the platform itself costs at each tier.
What moves the number for a custom build
- How different your commerce rules are. Standard products, carts and discounts are what Shopify does well. Subscriptions that pause, swap and ship on your calendar, or pricing that depends on the buyer, are where custom code earns its cost.
- Systems it must talk to. Warehouse, ERP, accounting, returns and email each add integration work. Two systems is a Starter Build; five or more is a larger scope.
- Wholesale next to DTC. One stock count and two price lists is a classic reason brands outgrow a single theme.
- Data you must own. Customer, order and subscription history held in your own cloud account is easier to move later than data held in a platform's apps.
- Checkout. A custom checkout means you carry the payment security and fraud work yourself, or hand it to a payment provider's hosted pieces. This is the part that most often pushes a brand back to a platform.
- Who maintains it. A custom store needs engineers after launch. The $5,000 to $10,000 monthly band covers a team; a lighter arrangement costs less and moves slower.
Three quotes for the same brief
Take one brief: a D2C food brand at $6 million a year with a subscription programme, a wholesale channel and a 3PL warehouse. Ask three suppliers for a quote.
- A Shopify Plus agency quotes the platform fee ($27,600 a year) plus a setup, typically in the range Upwork publishes for Plus setup ($5,000 to $15,000+), then apps for subscriptions and wholesale. The rules you want live inside paid apps.
- A freelancer quotes a custom theme and an app integration, $3,000 to $10,000 and $1,500 to $8,000 on Upwork's figures. Cheap to start; the risk is one person and no handover.
- A senior team building a custom operations layer quotes $15,000 to $50,000 once: your subscription and wholesale rules in code you own, connected to the warehouse, with the storefront on Shopify Advanced or a custom front end. At $6 million, staying on Advanced saves about $24,000 a year over Plus.
For that brief the strongest option is often the third: keep the hosted store, own the rules.
What a Starter Build buys
A KUMO Starter Build ($15,000 to $50,000) is a launched first production version: the commerce or operations logic you need, connections to one or two of your systems, order and stock handling, automated tests on real cases, deployment into your own cloud account and a handover. It sits beside Shopify or replaces the storefront, depending on what the brief needs. See custom software development for how KUMO scopes it. KUMO's founders built Volopay's first production version as its founding engineers, a finance product where every movement of money had to be traceable, which is the discipline a subscription and stock system needs.
Costs after launch
Shopify costs recur monthly whatever happens: the plan, card rates, third-party gateway fees and app subscriptions. A custom build costs once to build, then hosting, your payment provider's rates, and engineering time, $5,000 to $10,000 a month if you keep adding features. Budget for both honestly before comparing totals.
How to get a real number this week
Write down three things: your online card volume for the last twelve months, the manual process that costs you most hours each month, and the systems it touches. With the first you can run the arithmetic above yourself. With the other two a free 30-minute call with an engineer gives a band for your own brief.
FAQ
Is Shopify Plus worth it for a small brand? Usually not on price alone. Plus is $2,300 a month on a 3-year term (read 7 October 2026) against $299 on Advanced with annual billing, and the lower card rate saves money only past about $9.6 million of annual card volume. Move earlier only if checkout customisation, Functions or B2B tools remove real manual work.
How much does Shopify Plus cost per month? From $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, according to Shopify's Plus pricing page. Higher volume or more complex businesses move to a variable platform fee based on revenue.
How much does a custom Shopify or ecommerce build cost? Upwork lists custom theme development at $3,000 to $10,000 and Plus setup at $5,000 to $15,000+. A custom operations layer or storefront from a senior team costs $15,000 to $50,000 for a first production version, and $50,000 to $100,000 across several systems.
Can I go headless or custom and still use Shopify? Yes. Plus lists headless commerce among its features, and a custom front end can talk to a Shopify store. Many brands keep Shopify for catalogue and checkout and build their own logic around it.
What does ecommerce website development cost overall? See the ecommerce website development cost guide for routes from templates to custom builds, with dated prices.
